For Windows2000 WindowsXP:
Save the linked file above to
C:\Documents and Settings\CurrentUser\Application
Data\Microsoft\AddIns
where the CurrentUser is the user name used to
log on to the computer.
For Mac OSX
Save the linked file to:
Applications -- Microsoft
Office X -- Office -- Add-Ins
Choose Tools --> Add-Ins... from the menu in Excel and
check the box next to DuplicateProcessing as shown below.
Use of the tool:
When activated, the add-in will add a sub-menu to the Tools menu in Excel.
Clicking on Remove duplicates will show the input form.
The example provided is a partial list of NFL home teams for 2007.
With the cursor in the Column for Comparison box, click anywhere in the column
that will have duplicates removed.
Choose whether to delete by rows, or single cells. The latter will only affect the cells
in the column selected and will essentially break any relationships between row data.
Delete by rows will delete all data on the row of a duplicate entry.
The example list provided has 156 rows.
Check the box next to sum column if you would like to total a column other than the one
being checked for duplicates. (This works best with row removal method)
Select anywhere in the column to sum, while in the sum column box
Press Ok and wait for form to close. Check resulting list and totals column, if
selected.
The results show 28 unique entries, with the sum column totalling the original 156 entries.
- List must start at row 1
- Items must be sorted prior to duplicate removal process.
(Duplicate items must be continuous to be detected as duplicate)
- Gaps must be removed from the list. The first blank cell of the duplicates column
is treated as the end of the list.
- The edits made by the tool cannot be reversed by Edit -> Undo
